Significance

Chhath is believed to be one of the most ancient Hindu festivals, with references in the Rigveda. It is unique in that it worships the setting sun, expressing gratitude for sustaining life and seeking protection from harm.

  • Nahay Khay – holy dip and single sattvic meal (Day 1)
  • Kharna – 36-hour waterless fast broken at sunset (Day 2)
  • Sandhya Arghya – offerings to the setting sun in water (Day 3)
  • Usha Arghya – offerings to the rising sun at dawn (Day 4)
  • Preparing thekua, fruits, and sugarcane as offerings
