Understanding Your Natal Chart: A Beginner's Guide
Your natal chart — also called a birth chart — is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Think of it as a cosmic fingerprint: no two charts are exactly alike.
What You Need
To calculate your natal chart, you need three pieces of information:
- Date of birth — The day, month, and year
- Time of birth — As exact as possible (check your birth certificate!)
- Place of birth — The city and country
The Building Blocks
Planets
In astrology, "planets" include the Sun and Moon alongside Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Each planet represents a different facet of your personality and life experience.
Signs
The 12 zodiac signs color how each planet expresses itself. Your Sun in Aries expresses very differently than your Sun in Pisces.
Houses
The 12 houses represent different areas of life — from identity (1st house) to career (10th house) to the subconscious (12th house). Which house a planet falls in tells you where in your life its energy plays out.
Aspects
Aspects are the angles between planets. A conjunction (0°), trine (120°), or square (90°) between planets creates different dynamics in your chart.
Choosing a House System
Mego supports multiple house systems:
- Placidus — The most commonly used system in Western astrology
- Whole Sign — Each house occupies exactly one sign (popular in traditional astrology)
- Equal — Each house is exactly 30°
- Koch — Similar to Placidus but calculated differently
Each system can shift where your planets land in terms of houses, which can change the interpretation.
Tropical vs. Sidereal
- Tropical zodiac — Based on the seasons and the vernal equinox. This is the standard in Western astrology.
- Sidereal zodiac — Based on the actual positions of constellations. Used in Vedic/Jyotish astrology.
Mego lets you switch between both systems to explore different perspectives on your chart.
