Your natal chart — also called a birth chart — is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Think of it as a cosmic fingerprint: no two charts are exactly alike. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), this chart is called the Janma Kundali and serves as the foundation for all astrological analysis.

What You Need to Cast a Chart

To calculate an accurate natal chart you need three pieces of information:

  1. Date of birth — the day, month, and year.
  2. Exact time of birth — even a few minutes can shift your Ascendant (Lagna) and house cusps. Check your birth certificate or hospital records.
  3. Place of birth — the city and country, so the software can determine latitude, longitude, and time zone.

Tip: If your birth time is approximate, Vedic astrologers use a technique called birth-time rectification to fine-tune it based on life events.

The Building Blocks of a Chart

Planets (Grahas)

In Jyotish the nine key bodies are the Navagraha: Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each graha governs specific aspects of personality, health, career, and relationships.

  • Sun (Surya) — Soul, authority, vitality
  • Moon (Chandra) — Mind, emotions, nurturing
  • Mars (Mangal) — Energy, courage, conflict
  • Mercury (Budha) — Intellect, communication
  • Jupiter (Guru) — Wisdom, expansion, fortune
  • Venus (Shukra) — Love, beauty, luxury
  • Saturn (Shani) — Discipline, karma, longevity
  • Rahu — Ambition, obsession, material desire
  • Ketu — Spirituality, detachment, past karma

Signs (Rashis)

The 12 zodiac signs colour how each planet expresses itself. Your Sun in Mesha (Aries) expresses very differently from your Sun in Meena (Pisces). In the sidereal zodiac used by Jyotish, the sign boundaries are aligned with the actual constellations rather than the seasons.

Houses (Bhavas)

The 12 houses map different areas of life — from identity and wealth (1st and 2nd houses) to career and public reputation (10th house) to the subconscious and liberation (12th house). Which house a planet occupies tells you where in your life its energy plays out.

Aspects (Drishti)

Vedic aspects differ from Western ones. Every planet aspects the 7th house from it, while Mars additionally aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. These special aspects create powerful connections across the chart.

Tropical vs. Sidereal Zodiac

  • Tropical zodiac — anchored to the vernal equinox (0° Aries = March equinox). Standard in Western astrology.
  • Sidereal zodiac — anchored to the fixed stars, corrected by an offset called the Ayanamsha (currently ~24.2°). Standard in Vedic astrology.

Because of the roughly 24° difference, your Sun sign in the sidereal system is often one sign earlier than in tropical. For example, a tropical Leo Sun might be a sidereal Cancer Sun. Neither is "wrong" — they are two valid reference frames.

House Systems

Different house-division methods affect where planets fall:

  • Whole-Sign — the most traditional system in Jyotish where each house occupies exactly one rashi.
  • Placidus — the most popular system in modern Western astrology.
  • Equal — each house spans exactly 30° from the Ascendant degree.
  • Koch — a variation on Placidus using birth latitude.

Mego lets you switch between systems so you can compare how your chart looks under each one.
